Immigrant runners from Africa and South America are receiving support from New Yorkers
West Side Runners, led by 80-year-old Bill Staab, supports visa-seeking athletes and helps with memberships and entry fees for the runners. Diriba Degefa Yigezu received $10,000 for winning last week’s Philadelphia Marathon. When he came to the US, he didn’t have family to help him. Stabb helped him, and that is what motivated Diriba. West Side Runners doesn’t take any of the winnings but instead helps the athletes use the money to fund their travels and support their families back home.
