Immigrant Runners Receive Support from New Yorkers

Immigrant runners from Africa and South America are receiving support from New Yorkers

West Side Runners, led by 80-year-old Bill Staab, supports visa-seeking athletes and helps with memberships and entry fees for the runners. Diriba Degefa Yigezu received $10,000 for winning last week’s Philadelphia Marathon. When he came to the US, he didn’t have family to help him. Stabb helped him, and that is what motivated Diriba. West Side Runners doesn’t take any of the winnings but instead helps the athletes use the money to fund their travels and support their families back home.

Prior to winning, Girma was just another runner for West Side Runners. This race was a break-through for him and his career. Sponsors and agents have since contacted him about potential deals. Staab is hopeful approval for a US Green Card will come soon. Girma is planning to put this prize money toward a house in his home country. He is considering the Boston Marathon for the next race.
